Customers cannot tap the phone number on your website? Here is the fix, and how to check yours.

A phone number becomes tappable when it is written as a link whose address starts with tel: followed by the number, such as tel:+15175550100. If the number on your site is plain text, part of an image or split across lines, many phones will not dial it, and a customer on a phone has to copy it by hand or give up. Check it on your own phone, fix it in the header, footer and contact page, and make sure it matches the number on your Google listing.

Want it fixed? I quote a flat price before I touch anything. The free Google scorecard checks for a tap-to-call number in about ten seconds.

How do you make a phone number clickable on a website?

Check it on your own phone

Open your website on your phone, not your computer, and tap the phone number at the top of the page and on the contact page. If the dialer opens with the number filled in, it works. If nothing happens, or the number is part of a picture or a banner, it needs fixing. Try a second phone if you can, because phones handle plain text differently.

Turn the number into a tel: link

In WordPress, select the number in the block editor, add a link, and type tel: followed by the number with the country code and no spaces, such as tel:+15175550100. Most page builders also have a phone or call button that does the same thing. Do it everywhere the number appears: the header, the footer, the contact page and any call buttons.

Match it to your Google listing

Use the same main number on the website and on your Google Business Profile. When the two disagree, a customer does not know which one to call, and the mismatch is one of the things the free scorecard flags.

What to avoid

What else stops customers from calling from your website?

A number that is only inside an image or a slider, two different numbers on the same page with no label, or a number hidden behind a menu on phones. Each one adds a step between a customer who is ready and the call. Put one clear number at the top of every page.

Old numbers are the other trap: a former line in the footer, on a PDF price list, or on an old directory listing that still shows up in search. Listings Sync finds and corrects those outside your site, and the scorecard checks that the phone on your site matches the listing.

What the free scorecard checks

Two groups, each line marked OK, CHECK or FIX: your Google listing (categories, hours, photos, rating, and review count against the three businesses Google shows first) and your website (secure connection, a tap-to-call number at the top, the phone matching the listing, page title and business details). Run your scorecard.

Questions, answered plainly.

Why is my phone number not clickable on my website?

Because it is written as plain text or placed inside an image. Some phones guess that plain text is a phone number and make it tappable, many do not, and no phone can dial a number inside a picture. A tel: link works on every phone.

Does a clickable phone number help with Google?

Google does not promise a ranking boost for it. It helps the customer who already found you, which is the point: someone on a phone can call in one tap instead of copying the number. It also makes it easy to check that the website and the Google listing share the same number.

Does tap-to-call work on desktop computers?

On a computer, a tel: link opens whatever calling app is set up, such as a phone app linked to a cell phone, or does nothing. That is fine. The link matters most on phones, where many people look for a local business.

What does it cost to have Zomtronics fix it?

The scorecard is free and tells you in about ten seconds whether your site has a tap-to-call number. Fixing the number alone is a small job at a flat price, quoted before any work starts. The Website Tune-Up for an existing WordPress site is $499.
